Who was St Lewis?
- Born on 25 April 1214 at Poissy, near Paris
- Son of King Louis XIIIand Blanche of Castile
- He became King at the age of 12 when his father died suddenly
- His mother, Blanche, ruled France as regentunitl he reached maturity
- Louis' mother instilled in him her devout Christianity and he grew up a very holy man
- He built Sainte Chapelle in Paris which is now one of the most beautiful in France and very famous.
- King Louis IX collected many relics of Jesus. The only ones left are the crown of thorns, a nail and a fragment of the cross.
- He married Margaret of Provence and they are thought to have had 11 children
- King Louis IX went on Crusades in the Middle East
- He died at the age of 56
- His son Philip III became King of France
- King Louis IX was proclaimed a saint in 1297 by Pope Boniface VIII for being a model ‘Christian King’.
